In 1856, the physician and naturalist Anastasie Fătu founded the first Botanical Garden in Romania, near Râpa Galbenă. In 1921, Professor Alexandru Popovici founded a new garden behind “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, with greenhouses for tropical plants. The garden moved here in 1964, and received the name of the initiator. Over 80 hectares display thousands of varieties, divided into 10 sections. The exhibitions of azalea and camellia (each February) along with the chrysanthemum (October-November) are irresistible attractions for visitors. The most romantic section, the Rosarium, groups over 600 varieties of roses. Also, the section dedicated to the visually impaired, which contains the most fragrant varieties, labelled in Braille, makes this Botanical Garden quite unique. (PHOTO : Alexandra CEHAN)
