The Art Galleries of Iași were inaugurated in 2012 in the “Saint Friday” Passage situated in front of the Central Market Hall.
These galleries appeared with the purpose of being a main space of promoting artists of Iași and Moldavia, especially the members of the Visual Artists’ Union. Depending on the time you will choose to visit them, you will have the opportunity of assisting to painting, sculpting, photography or tapestry exhibitions.
This passage became an appropriate space for hosting art exhibitions. In 2007, during a project of creating a pedestrian passage underneath Anastasie Panu Street, some ruins representing former cellars of a boyar house were discovered. It is estimated that these cellars would have been built at the end of the 18th century. The conservation and restoration of the archaeological site formed by a series of walls of the old construction, led to creating an ideal background for artistic manifestations. Inside the passage, the routes of the ancient streets passing the area centuries ago, were marked. The name of the passage comes from the old monastery “Saint Friday”, built in this area around 1600 and demolished in 1879, due to bad shape.
The Art Galleries of Iași, have been since 2016 a real promoter of the city through images. The Visual Memory Centre arranged here, wishes to offer an adequate expressing environment for photography enthusiasts in Iași. The purpose is the mutual training of the participants in the art of photography, as well as the development of what shall become in the future, the city’s visual memory.
