Victims of Communism Memorial

This monument in the park of the “Mitocul Maicii Domnului” Church was inaugurated in 2010. It was completed by a team of sculptors coordinated by the artist Vasile Leondar, at the initiative of the Association of the Former Political Prisoners of Romania. The six metres high bronze sculpture shows three grieved persons, with their hands shackled, and commemorates the thousands of people who suffered or died in the brutal communist prisons in Gherla, Aiud, Sighet, Pitești, Suceava and Râmnicu Sărat. Among the local political prisoners who died in these dungeons, we remember victims Gheorghe I. Brătianu (historian, professor and academician), Dumitru Iov (head manager of the Iași National Theatre, poet and prose writer), and Anton Durcovici (Romano-Catholic bishop of Iași, who was beatified in 2014).
