Union Square

On the 100th anniversary of the Principalities’ Unification, the Communist Party decided to remodel the square and eliminate its “bourgeois character” by placing a collective housing ensemble in the architectural style of socialism inspired from France. In front of Unirea Hotel (1969) there is a pavement mosaic recalling themes of communist propaganda: the country’s beauty, the mechanisation of agriculture, the industrial future, the national ideals, the building sector, the arts and the “peace between nations”. In the centre square, there are representations of Union Dance (Hora) as a strip made of linked rhombi, as well as the legendary scene of the founding of Moldavia. The Union Square is a favourite place for public events, including the celebration of the Union on January 24th and the 1989 Anti-communist Revolution. (PHOTO : Mihai BULAI)
