The Palace of Justice and Administration was built between 1906 and 1925 on the ruins of the medieval Princely Court (1434) and of the Princely Palace (1806). Here, in May 1600, Michael the Brave proclaimed himself “Prince of Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldavia”, thus completing a temporary union of the Romanian principalities. On the 5th of January 1859, in the Hall of Assembly of the old palace, Alexandru Ioan Cuza was elected Prince of Moldavia. His election in Bucharest, on January 24th, helped lead to the birth of Romania. The History Museum of Moldavia, along with the Voivodes’ Room, show the State’s evolution while the “Henri Coandă” Room and the court hall remind of the interwar period. The tower offers a unique experience as its eight bells of the carillon clock play the Union Dance on the hour. (PHOTO : Bendik AARSAETHER)
