Merarilor (The “Apple Sellers”) Synagogue was opened in 1869 in an imposing two-level house within the Jewish Quarter. It was completed by the efforts of the guild of cultivators and sellers of apples, which were thriving in those times in the Quarter of Târgu Cucu. The synagogue was initially hidden behind a row of buildings, on a street then called the ”Labyrinth”. It was saved from being demolished during the communist period, but it was hidden by a row of trees in order to prevent it from being noticed, and was used as a storehouse. The synagogue was reopened in 2015, after a long rehabilitation. The building is remarkable through its stylization of some Doric columns, and through its very bright halls. The synagogue is active and organises cultural events, such as klezmer music concerts, book launches and commemorations. (PHOTO : Ioan APETREI)
