Bulevardul Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt 16, Iași 700064, România
The Metropolitan Cathedral, opened in 1887 in the heart of the Ensemble, is considered to be “The Mother of Moldavia’s Churches”. It was built in the Neoclassic style, with influences from the Italian Renaissance. Inside, Gheorghe Tăttărescu`s paintings, the gilded iconostasis and thrones, and the large stained-glass windows are great attractions. Pilgrims will discover a canopy dedicated to the relics of Saint Parascheva, protector of Moldavia, and the wonderworking Icon of the Blessed Virgin. The nearby “Saint George” Church (“Old Bishopry”), built in 1769, enchants through its Corinthian columns, spiralled frieze and the ogee arches of the porch. Since 2016, the Metropolitan Museum in the Cathedral’s basement offers an unforgettable experience within its seven thematic halls. (PHOTO : Mihai BULAI)
