The building belongs to Iași County Council and was erected in 1921 in a Neo-Romanian style. In the beginning, it hosted the “Romanian Life” literary magazine, led by the writer Garabet Ibrăileanu. During the WWII, here was the Police Station, the core of the 29th-30th June 1941 Pogrom, when thousands of Jews, mainly men, were arrested, imprisoned, mistreated, and some were shot. In the yard, the entrance to the basement can be seen, where the detained were interrogated. Some of the survivors were taken to the train station and loaded onto the “death trains”, while others were forced to clean the traces of the massacre. Six local people were granted the title “Righteous among the Nations” by Israel’s Yad Vashem Institute for having risked everything to save their Jewish friends, neighbors or colleagues.
