This building dates from the beginning of the 19th century. It was built in a Neoclassic style, with a terrace and columns to sustain the balcony. It was initially a boyar house, a bank and even a meeting place for members of the Government during the First World War. It eventually became the headquarters of the State Security (secret police agency) in the 1950s. This is the place where political opponents of the communist regime, especially intellectuals and students, were tortured. The sidewalk passage is known as “the flunkers’ archway” because of the superstition that those who walk under the archway will not pass their exams. On the first floor, the “Meru” Café-Galleries feature exhibitions in a dynamic creation space and organise delightful jazz nights. (PHOTO : Mihai BULAI)
