Casa Pătrată, Bulevardul Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt 69, Iași 700075, România
The Square House was built between 1964-1969 by the plans of architect Nicolae Vericeanu. Initially it hosted the County (Communist) Party Committee, and today it serves as headquarters of the County Council and of the Prefecture. The building is located between four streets in the middle of a historical area, featuring an interior yard. The façade has decorative bricks, a mosaic with socialist representations and concrete abutments. The main elements are the office and the balcony of the former Prime Secretary of RCP, position taken between 1974-1979 by Ion Iliescu, president of Romania after the fall of communist regime. This is the place from where the dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu delivered indigestible speeches to the population forced to attend in the Palace Square, the last one on September 15th, 1989.
