In the Palace Square, two monuments commemorate the martyrs and pay homage to the revolutionaries who participated in the bloody Revolution of December 1989. The wooden wayside cross erected in 1990 is a reminder of the 16 citizens of Iași who died during the Revolution in Bucharest, Timișoara, Brașov, and in Iași (only one) out of a total of 1142. Next to it, a white marble cross contains the names of the revolutionaries of Iași who were detained between the 14th and 22nd of December 1989, as well as the names of those who fought against the communist regime. Although it is officially accepted that the Revolution started on the 16th of December in Timișoara, some specialists affirm that the suppressed protest on the 14th of December in Iași was actually the beginning of the end of the communist dictatorship.(PHOTO : Cosmin CEUCĂ)
